Gangubai Kathiawadi is an Indian hindi language biographical crime drama film which is directed by Sanjay Leela bhansali and produced by Jayantilal Gada and Sanjay leela bhansali himself. Alia bhatt is leading the main role in this cinema, she is playing the role of gangubhai. Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijaay Raaz, Indira Tiwari and Seema Pahwa are playing the role with filmstar Ajay Devgan featuring in an extented cameo appearance.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a real story based movie of Gangubhai Harjivandas, also known as Gangubhai Kothewali. She was an indian prostitute, popular for her flabbergasting move for the rights of her and all other prostitutes in the area of Kamathipura red light area. The life of Gangubhai was already documented in the book Mafia queens of Mumbai which written by H. Hussain Zaidi.

Many girls get trapped in the name love from the ancient time and even now a days too. The very innocent girls at their early ages, either they fall in love with a wrong person who trap them in a bad manner and bound these girls to escape from home wit them or even sometimes, unknowingly some of the cars arrive aside a road and pick up any girl from the road and they just sell them to red light area in a few profit.

Gangubai Kathiawadi was one those girls who was sold in a red light area as a sex worker. Gangubhai always dreamt to be an actress in Bollywood as she belongs to a highly educated family. She often used to practice her acting talent in front of the mirror and she used to dress up. At the age of 16 she fallen in love with someone who actually don’t deserve a girl like her.

Unfortunately she was very young and decided to escape from home with this evil guy who was 28 years old, named Ramnik lal. They fled to Mumbai and got married somehow but ramnik sold her in a brothel for rupees 500 only. She reached at such a place she had never imagined. She had to accommodate the place and their habits and culture and started the work as a prostitute there. She had to go through many difficulties and torture. But she somehow managed to adapt the situation. In a short while, she became very renowned as a lady leader of some of the brothels.

Because one day a person named Shaukat Khan Pathan tortured her physically and financially. But then Gangubhai went to the underworld don Karim Lala to complain about Pathan. Lala confirmed her to help out of the situation and told her to inform him next time when he comes. Gangu had gone emotional as she would never got such empathy before, she immidiately tied a RAKHi on Lala’s hand in return. Since then, she reputed as Lala’s supposed sister as Lala truly helped her a lot.

Once a government order had come to move the brothel from there as St. Anthony’s  Girl’s High school was eshtablished in Kamathipura. Gangubhai stand by this order and opposed this, also she presented her case to the PM Jawaharlal Nehru. When he refused by saying that he would do something for all the sex workers, he further added that he will help them to get married.

Gangu then put an affirm to the PM to marry her. But when he remained silent, she proved her assertion that no one is going to marry a prostitute. She fought for the rights of all the prostitutes out there that time and those who reached unfortunately, she counseled and sent back them. Because, there were many girls who had fled their homes for getting into film industry and got stuck in brothel. Everyone used to call her Ganga maa respecfully. After her death, one of her photographs and statues were erected in brothels.
