But the Duffer Brothers need you to disregard the time-gap. Although the kids look exceptionally older, due to the fact that six months are imagined to have passed in the universe.
Anyhow, after the finale of season 3 and all that came about with the Mind Flayer, lots of our heroes are scattered. Eleven or Jane Hopper, after losing her powers to the largest beast within the Upside Down, is living with the Byers family in California. Jim Hopper as we know was revealed to be alive but is caught in the hostile Soviet Union. The rest of the major characters, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson , Lucas Sinclair, and others are still at Hawkins and continue to have their personal struggles.
Lucas enters the cool guys club and wins the basketball championship, Mike and Dustin join Hellfire Club, a crew of weirdos who meet and speak over tabletop RPGs and lure in Lucas’s sister Erica. Max on the other hand is still not able to get over the death of her brother Billy. Meanwhile, Eleven is being bullied at school and Will is unable to protect her.
There is also a new addition Chrissy Cunningham who introduces the spooky stuff this season. She is haunted by visions of her family who are dead and her grandfather’s clock that seems to be ticking right up to the time of her death. But before she can meet her end, there is a nightmarish creature that only she can see. A scene involving her is the most gruesome moment the show has ever been.
Is this creature something absolutely unrelated to the Upside Down and belongs to another hellish dimension or it is in some way associated with the Mind Flayer. Reanimating dead characters would not be new for the show,right? In the very first scene itself, we see, Eleven’s “Papa” that is Martin Brenner. It is a flashback, but is he really alive?
Stranger Things 4 offers a massive pack of entertainment with many thrilling moments. For the first time the show is coming with a truly-spine-chillingly-scary territory. The interplay between the character remains fun and homage to classic horror and other genre movies are good. Season 4 is also a good balance between humour and darker moments.
But all those good bits are set off by painfully long runtimes. The episodes are long,this has been an issue with several Netflix series, but Stranger Things 4 takes everything else to backseat in this department. It feels as if the writers do not want you to enjoy the show, even as they offer some excellent writing. Stranger Things 4 behaves a lot like an erratic teenager, like one of its heroes, in fact.
